Archive for March, 2009

I have a confession to make. I tear home with my camera and no matter what time it is, I can’t go to bed until I’ve loaded all the photos because I can’t wait to look at them. Often I will edit one or two photos just for fun, then hit the hay. Unfortunately, once I’ve actually SEEN the photos it can be hard to motivate myself to finish editing them later! One of my goals this year is to figure out a good, consistent method of editing instead of getting unedited raw shots piling up and haunting me.

So these shots are almost three weeks old, and little Ned is now even bigger than he was when I took these (6 weeks old). Still totally adorable though! Big thankyou to Melina and Jace for graciously allowing me to photograph their adorable little boy, it was a real pleasure.

Mclaren Vale Weekend

March 15, 2009

Menzel and I spent a beauuuuutiful, relaxing long weekend in Mclaren Vale. Lots of wine tasting, relaxing and photographing :)

Not only did I leave the laptop at home (that’s right, no facebook) but I even left my phone at all so I was totally incommunicado the whole time! Stress free, baby!

One of the best things about the weekend was how NICE everyone we encountered was. Everyone – the staff in the shops, the folks at the wineries, the people on the streets – was just so lovely and friendly. Considering Mclaren Vale is only an hour or so away from Adelaide I feel like an idiot for not going there earlier and I will definitely be heading back.

Goals are important

March 2, 2009

I have a dream. Just a little one. I’d like to think it wouldn’t be that hard to fulfill. So here goes. I’m going to write it down, and make it happen one day.

I want a studio room. A nice, big room with white walls and a big north facing window that lets in lots of light. I want nice wooden floorboards. I want some of my photos mounted, hanging on the walls, looking nice and colourful. I’d like a nice LCD on the wall. Around the room I want a bunch of different armchairs and couches, in all sorts of different colours, to use as props in photoshoots. On one wall there will be a background mount and lots of nice backgrounds in bright colours.

In this room I would like to photograph a lot of different people. Lots of adorable kids and their families, but also just random people I find interesting. Because it’s a studio room, I can just leave all my lighting gear and photography stuff set up all the time, ready for whenever I decide to pop in. (Because, you know, somehow in this future I am of course either retired or making a happy fortune from my love of photography… and thus will be free to ‘pop in’ whenever I like, unburdened by the 9 to 5 daily grind. Haha.)

So today, by writing this down, I am setting myself a goal. I want to see this happen in the next few years. I have a real problem with setting myself goals, since I’m a pessimist and totally afraid of failure, but I don’t think it’s that unrealistic (well, other than being lucky enough to have a whole big extra spare room!) so this one could be OK.

I started writing this as a locked post so that only I could read it, but actually, I’m going to leave it open as a reminder. Public accountability and all that. I figure when it’s in my head it’s just a dream, but now that I’ve written it down it’s officially become a goal…for one day in the not-so-distant future, maybe.
